NOVEMBER UPDATE 2021

Updated: Feb 7, 2022

Filming finished

Filming has been completed on an eight-month shoot, in and around New York City, for the new ten-part TV series “The Gilded Age”, written by Julian Fellowes (“Downton Abbey”) and produced by Home Box Office and Warner Media. SJ plays “Bannister, the butler”. (From “King George V” to a butler, so it goes.)

The saga will make its debut in the U.S on January 24th on HBO Max, and will go out in the UK on Sky.

Currently on Broadway

He is currently appearing in “Trouble in Mind” by Alice Childress on Broadway at the American Airlines Theatre for The Roundabout Theatre Company. SJ plays a senile stage doorman/janitor (Still further down the social scale. Where will it end? See below.)

“A wry and moving look at racism, ego and identity, as a black stage actress rehearses a play about all three.”

“The play of the moment.”

– New York Times Critic’s Choice

“Glorious to behold.”

– The Wall Street Journal

“It will take your breath away.”- AP

“A dream cast rounded out by SJ.”

- The NY Observer.

The play opened on November 18th, running until January 9th. This will bring his appearances on Broadway to thirteen.

The Sound of His Voice

In the meantime, he can be heard reading the following audiobooks; Oscar Wilde’s “The Happy Prince and other stories”(for Alison Larkin Presents), Agatha Christie’s “The Secret of Chimneys”(For Audible), Philip Goodrich’s “Somersett – Benjamin Franklin and the Masterminding of The American Revolution”(for Blackstone Audio), Anthony Doerr’s “Cloud Cuckoo Land”(for Simon & Schuster), all of which won AudioFile Magazine’s special Earphones Award.

While recently in the UK, he played a psychotic accountant called Droot Scraliontis for a dramatization of Terry Jones’s novel of “Douglas Adams’s Starship Titanic”. And in “The Sandman III”, produced by Dirk Maggs for Audible as Hermas, a senior flesh-eating ghoul. (Social descent completed, one supposes).
